Dear Mr. Smith:
I am a third year law student at Saint Louis University School of Law, who is seeking to obtain a
permanent associate position with Smith and Associates, P.C. upon my graduation in May 2009.
As a native of St. Louis, I intend to practice law in the St. Louis area and to sit for the Missouri Bar
Examination in July 2009. As a certified public accountant with several years of practical
accounting experience, I am impressed with your firm’s strong presence in the tax, corporate and
financial practice areas. My previous tax experience, coupled with my strong analytical and
research skills, will serve the best interests of your firm and its clients.
Prior to attending law school, I obtained a B.S. in accounting from Georgetown University and became
licensed as a certified public accountant in Missouri and Illinois. While in college, I worked for Ernst
& Young approximately 10-15 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during the
summers. In the company’s corporate tax division, I worked closely with the firm’s accountants
in the preparation of corporate sales, use and property tax returns. In addition, during college, I
worked as a teaching assistant in the statistics department at Georgetown University
interpreting statistical data and developing statistical models. Through these experiences, I
developed a strong familiarity with corporate accounting and tax issues, in addition to obtaining
computer proficiency in a variety of database and software applications. In addition, I worked
for three years as a tax accountant at Jones, Sickman and Potter, a St. Louis accounting firm.
In this position, I became versed in tax planning and compliance, on behalf of a variety of
clients, including individuals, partnerships, corporations and nonprofit entities.
I would appreciate the opportunity to interview with you to discuss employment opportunities with
your firm. I can be reached at (314) 444-4444 or email@example.com. Thank you for your time and
consideration. I look forward to speaking with you in the near future.
