Dear Mr. Brown:
John Smith, an associate in your firm’s real estate department and a former law school classmate,
suggested that I contact you regarding the possibility of obtaining an associate position with Smith,
Brown & Associates following my graduation from Saint Louis University School of Law in May 2009.
As a native of Illinois, I intend to return to the Chicago area to practice law and to sit for the Illinois Bar
Examination in July 2009. I am interested in your firm’s civil litigation and real estate practice groups,
since my law school curriculum and previous work experience are concentrated in these areas. I will
receive my J.D. with a Concentration in Civil Litigation Skills.
I enclose my resume, references, writing sample and transcript for your review and consideration. As
my resume reflects, my summer associate experience at Blane & O’Hara provided me with valuable
insight into the areas of civil litigation and real estate law. I became well versed in all phases of litigation,
from client intake through final disposition, and had the opportunity to draft a variety of pleadings and
discovery. Additionally, I researched many real estate law issues and drafted numerous memoranda
relating to this research for John Blane, the head of the real estate practice
group.
My work as a faculty fellow for Saint Louis University School of Law Professor Peter W. Salsich first
attracted me to real estate law. As a faculty fellow, I assisted Professor Salsich in the preparation of a land
use book for practitioners, and edited seminar materials on urban development land use. In addition, I
participated in Moot Court, Trial Advocacy and Civil Practice, each of which has provided
me with essential litigation skills. I am confident that my substantive knowledge of litigation and real
estate, coupled with my practical experience, will allow me to make a valuable contribution to your
firm.
I will be in Chicago from January 10 through January 15, 2009, and would appreciate the opportunity
to meet with you during this week should your schedule permit. I will contact your office next week to
confirm receipt of my materials and to inquire about an interview. In the interim, please do not hesitate to
contact me is you require additional information. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Elise M. Jones
