Dear Mr. Morris:
I am a second year law student at Saint Louis University School of Law, currently ranked in the top 20% of my
class, who would like to be considered for a summer associate position with Morris, Lane & Baird for the
upcoming summer. Your firm is appealing to me because its practice exclusively focuses on the representation
of individuals, as opposed to large corporate interests. Although not a native of St. Louis, my
attendance at Saint Louis University over the past six years has reaffirmed my desire to live and
work in the St. Louis area upon my graduation from law school.
This past summer, I worked as a law clerk at Blane & O’Hara, a small, civil practice firm specializing in real estate,
trusts and estates and family law. While working at Blane & O’Hara, I routinely met with individual clients to obtain
background and financial information; review and execute wills, powers of attorney and trust agreements; and to
answer any questions regarding the status of their cases. I found the personal client contact highly rewarding and
hope to continue building upon my communication skills. In addition, I further refined
my research and writing skills by drafting a variety of contracts and pleadings at the request of three
senior partners.
As an undergraduate student, I was an active member of Saint Louis University’s Mock Trial Team, eventually
attaining the position of co-captain my senior year. This experience was a key factor in my decision to attend
law school and was invaluable in teaching me strong advocacy skills. I am testing and refining my advocacy
skills through my participation in Moot Court at Saint Louis University School of Law. In addition to my
communication skills, I also recognize the importance of strong writing and analytical skills and am serving on
the Saint Louis University School of Law Public Law Journal.
I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you, at your convenience, to discuss summer clerkship
opportunities at Morris, Lane & Baird. I will contact your office in two weeks to inquire about the
possibility of arranging an interview. If you wish to contact me before then, I can be reached at 495-
498-7897 or by e-mail at ssmith65@slu.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Very truly yours,
Susan T. Smith
